Meet the Fandom Grammarians

I'd like to introduce you to the Fandom Grammarians, those linguaphiles who will be eagerly answering your questions and discussing the mechanics, usage, and philosophy of grammar and language. I'd like to emphasize that we come from a variety of different backgrounds (including international backgrounds!) and have a plethora of fandoms among us.

achacunsagloire (March 2012—present)
achacunsagloire has a degree in English and a minor in creative writing. She's been writing for over 10 years and is an avid reader. Her primary fandom these days is Resident Evil, but she's written for Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, and various real people/bands.

ariestess (Feb 2011–present)
ariestess is a former English major and has been writing for 40 of her 47 years of life. She is primarily a stickler for grammar & punctuation, and has an unhealthy obsession with commas (particularly the Oxford comma). Her primary fandoms are Babylon 5, Damien, Once Upon a Time, Poltergeist: the Legacy, West Wing, and Wicked (book & musical).

chiroho (March 2009–present)
chiroho has spent his career writing, editing, and polishing just about every form of customer communication for various software companies. He is a lover of words, writing, and proper usage, and has become the person many seek out for proofreading, editing, and polishing their work. Originally from Australia, though now living in the US, he has been writing and editing fanfic since the late 1990s. His favourite fandoms include Person of Interest, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Farscape, and Stargate SG-1.

chomiji (March 2010–present)
chomiji spent 10 years of her career working as a copy editor/writer. Since then her editorial writing skills have been put to task working on technical newsletters, documentation, and a daily interest column. She has a long history with fandom, including writing RPG packages and fanfiction. Her current favorite fandoms are the manga series Saiyuki, Samurai Deeper Kyo, and Black Lagoon, Pratchett's Discworld, and Hodgell's Chronicles of the Kencyrath.

green_grrl (Oct 2007–present)
With a BA in English and MA in Library Science, green_grrl has been professionally copyediting, researching, writing, and proofreading since 1984. An innate grammar maven, she's been writing and betaing fanfic since joining LiveJournal in 1995. She writes mostly in the Stargate and Due South fandoms, but she reads and recs like a fannish butterfly.

lady_ganesh—Moderator (Oct 2007–present)
lady_ganesh has worked as a professional copywriter and writer/editor in addition to flitting in and out of fandoms for years. She has served as a writer, beta reader, and cheerleader, and is known to nitpick with the best. Her fandoms are myriad and diverse, but her favorite fandoms are Saiyuki, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sherlock, Kyou Kara Maoh!, Weiss Kreuz, and Yami no Matsuei.

mab_browne (March 2010–present)
mab_browne loves words. With a dusty English degree and experience writing and betaing, she is a New Zealander with a passion for apostrophes. She's a fan of many series, but has spent most of her time with The Sentinel, The Professionals, and Sapphire and Steel.

melayneseahawk—Moderator (Oct 2007–present)
melayneseahawk is a grammar nerd with a love of unused and abused tenses. She has been writing original fiction for almost 20 years and fanfiction for over a decade. She also finds time to beta read and punctuate like she's British. Her favorite fandoms include: Stargate: SG-1, Harry Potter, Star Trek of various flavors, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

pigsflew (Guest Grammarian July 2013–present)
pigsflew has a degree in English and Computer Science. He has experience betaing and writing both fanfiction and original fiction. His favorite fandoms include Mass Effect, Stargate: SG-1, Battlestar: Galactica, and Harry Potter, among many others.

pinkeuphoria1 (March 2012–present)
pinkeuphoria1 is in the first year of a Masters focused on translations to and from English. She has experience betaing and critiquing fiction and nonfiction essays, and is always looking to learn more about grammar. Her favorite fandoms include Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes.

NEW purenegative (April 2014–present)
purenegative is a secondary school English teacher, and is currently studying for her postgraduate degree in education. She loves to write plays and poems, and occasionally writes fanfiction. Some of her fandoms include The Avengers, X-Men: First Class, Torchwood, Thor (MCU), and the most recent Journey into Mystery run.

randi2204 (March 2012–present)
randi2204 has been writing in fandom for over 10 years. She is frequently called upon at work to make sure documents are grammatically correct before they are published. The fandoms in which she has been the most active are Voltron, Gatchaman, the Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Magnificent Seven (TV).

theemdash—Moderator (Oct 2007–present)
theemdash has a BA in Creative Writing, is currently working on a Creative Writing MFA, and has worked as a professional editor for over a decade. She has written over 100 pieces of fanfiction and has served as a beta reader. Her passion for grammar is only diminished by her passion for fandom. She has many fandoms, but her current favorites are Stargate: SG-1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Fullmetal Alchemist, and the DC TV universe.

traycer_ (July 2008–present)
After over 10 years of writing articles, essays, and other non-fiction related publications, traycer_ recently discovered a love of writing fiction. She is working toward a degree in Creative Writing with a minor in Linguistics, and is in the process of writing her first original fiction novel. Her favorite fandoms include Stargate: SG-1, Sarah Connor Chronicles, X-Files, and Harry Potter.

whymzycal (March 2009–present)
whymzycal has a degree in Literature, has taught college English Composition since 2001, and has experience working on staff for a literary magazine. She's a firm believer in the serial comma. Although she has an almost unholy love of giant robots, her favorite fandoms are sadly robot-less: Saiyuki, Harry Potter, Supernatural, and Sherlock Holmes.

Retired Fandom Grammarians
amedia Oct 2007–June 2011
amedia has a Ph.D. in philosophy and has taught Latin, Greek, and philosophy. She has also been in editorial positions for academic and literary journals. A dinosaur of fandom, she has been writing fanfic since 1978 and has edited several fanzines. She is currently most active in the Tin Man, Rat Patrol, and Barney Miller fandoms, but also enjoys many others, including I Spy, Wild Wild West, and Star Trek.

blackjackcat March 2012–May 2013
blackjackcat is an editorial assistant at a journal at her university and has worked as an English T.A. She is also in her second year as an editor at brigits_flame. She has been reading and writing for nearly two decades and is currently pursuing a B.A. in Creative Writing. Her fandom of choice is Gundam Wing.

bluewolf458 March 2012–Oct 2016
bluewolf458 is a retired UK primary school teacher who learned the basics of grammar in the 1940s. She has been writing fanfiction in Star Trek, The Professionals, and The Sentinel since 1975, and edited Star Trek zines between 1976 and 1996. Her current fandom of choice is The Sentinel.

flipflop_diva March 2012–January 2014
flipflop_diva has worked in the newspaper industry and has been editing professionally for the past 15 years. She has been writing creatively since she could pick up a pencil and now spends her nights reading and writing fanfic and flailing over fandoms. Her favorite fandoms to write are Harry Potter and Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice but she also dabbles in Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie and Lost, among others.

katiefoolery Oct 2007–March 2010
katiefoolery has a BA in Professional Writing and a potentially unhealthy obsession with apostrophes. She has 2 years of proof-reading experience on a magazine. Completely devoted to words, she has been writing since age six. She has been giving concrit on fanfic and original work for a few years, doing serious beta work this past year. Her favorite fandoms include Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, DragonballZ, Discworld, and Diana Wynne Jones.

kay_brooke Oct 2007–December 2011
kay_brooke is working on an MS in microbiology. She has edited her high school and college yearbooks and three separate literary magazines. With several English and journalism classes under her belt, she writes original fiction, regularly providing concrit to fellow authors. While not a fanfic writer, she has read fanfic for six years. Her favorite fandoms include Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: SG-1, The X-Files, Heroes, and Doctor Who.

mendax July 2008–December 2011
mendax has worked as a proofreader/copy editor for more than a decade and has both a home and work copy of Garner's Modern American Usage because she can't bear to be away from it for too long. Most of her fandom time is spent in a tiny, dusty corner with Voltron and Gatchaman, but she occasionally peeks out to see what the kids are up to these days with The Sentinel, Good Omens and Saiyuki.

momebie Oct 2007–March 2010
momebie has been working as a copyright/permissions editor for the past year. She's been writing close to 10 years and has been actively involved in a local writing group for the past 3 years. She is also a literature nerd and will read any book on the writing process. She's written about 75 pieces of fanfic over the past 4 years. Her favorite fandoms are Harry Potter, Good Omens, Gaiman-verses, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop.

moon_raven2 Feb 2011–Sept 2013
moon_raven2 is an avid reader and an insane researcher, unafraid of tackling the reference books to find even the most obscure answers. She is currently primarily involved with Criminal Minds, but has previous fan experience with X-Files, Sailor Moon, Homicide: Life on the Street, Gundam Wing, and Rent.

redatdawn / superhero_specs Oct 2007–March 2009
superhero_specs has been an editor on a literary magazine, a copyeditor and staff reporter on a newspaper, and a TA for a Logic class (which has more to do with grammar than you'd think). A compulsive purchaser of grammar and language books, she owns an Oxford Shorter English Dictionary and knows how to use it. She spends most of her fan-time with Stargate: SG-1, but is also fond of House, Harry Potter, and Firefly.

rigel_7 Oct 2007–March 2009
With degrees in botanical science and linguistics completed, rigel_7 moved on to editing, proofreading, and creative writing. She is known to have begun a passionate love affair with the Oxford comma, flirts madly with semi-colons, and insists that there is a 'u' in colour. A longtime fan of the worlds of Joss Whedon, she is currently most active in Stargate, and also enjoys Battlestar Galactica and Harry Potter.

skroberts Oct 2007–March 2011
skroberts has a degree in Communication Studies with a minor in English which gave her plenty of experience proofing her fellow students' research papers. She has written over 60 pieces of fanfiction over 10 years and has served as a beta reader. She comes from a long line of teachers and grammar nerds and cannot resist correcting grammar. She enjoys reading fanfic for Stargate: Atlantis, NCIS, Supernatural, and Psych.

sorcha_gaia Oct 2007–March 2009
sorcha_gaia is a paralegal by day and a real person by night. She comes from a family of writers and has a Master's degree in English/Shakespeare. She is rabid about grammar and correct language usage, and has even devoted a page of her site to "A Fanfic Writer's Dos and Don'ts." She has written over 30 stories in her favorite oeuvre, Stargate: SG-1; her other fandoms include Harry Potter, Firefly, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

stoopbeck July 2008–March 2010
stoopbeck has a major in Creative Writing and spent two years on staff at her college newspaper. She has also spent time tutoring students in English basics and tutoring Korean students in English Composition. Her fandoms include Torchwood, NCIS, Stargate: Atlantis, and Criminal Minds.

supercheesegirl Oct 2007–January 2012
supercheesegirl has an MFA in Creative Writing. She has been in the editorial profession for 8+ years, and she's a published poet and book reviewer. Her favorite fandoms include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Firefly, and Harry Potter.

verilyverity July 2008–Dec 2009
For reasons known only to herself, verilyverity has completed a Bachelor of Science in biology, in a program that emphasized research training. This translated to lots of formal, non-fiction writing with an emphasis on clarity and intellectual parsimony. verilyverity is a native English speaker of Canadian extraction. Her favorite fandoms include Tin Man, Bones, Doctor Who, Phantom of the Opera, and Lucy Maud Montgomery.

zellieh March 2012–Sept 2013
zellieh has GCSEs in Eng. Lit. and Eng. Lang. and A-level English, along with decades of experience reading all kinds of fiction, textbooks, plays and poetry. She strives to improve her writing wherever she can which explains the shelf of books at home on language, poetry forms, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage. She is also a fan of the oxford comma. She is extremely multi-fannish, and is currently involved in Harry Potter, Jeeves & Wooster, Marvel universe, Sherlock Holmes, and Star Trek.
